Turning from Rome

Catholics like to hype high-profile conversions or reversions to Rome. But traffic in the opposite direction doesn't get quite the same press.

  1. I've always wished he would become an Evangelical (despite his problematic and weak arguments for Christianity). In that article Dinesh affirms he's a "born-again Christian". Maybe he is saying he's now self-consciously an Evangelical as opposed to Catholic. However, there are many Catholics who consider themselves "born-again Catholics" or "Born Again Catholics" or even "Evangelical Catholics". It's interesting that Dinesh didn't capitalize the "B" in "born" nor the "A" in "again". He may turn out to be like Francis J. Beckwith. Someone who hasn't intentionally left the Tiber.

The following link is Dr. White's article "Did Francis J. Beckwith Ever Leave the Tiber?"

As I've said before, I'm not saying that Catholics can't be saved. But I do believe that it's very, very difficult because the traditions of men have watered down and sometimes nullified the teaching of the Word of God. That's why I do believe we should be calling Catholics out of the Catholic Church (even if, IMHO, there's *just* enough truth in Catholicism to be saved).

  3. Annoyed Pinoy,

I've had the same wish for Dinesh. I also have the same concern of his conversion experience in that it might be similar to someone like Beckwiths.

Dinesh's description of his conversion is about his life journey and not about any specific doctrinal differences between Romanists and Evangelicals.

Where is the uniqueness of Christ's finished work on the cross?

    I didn't see it.

It is encouraging that he enjoyed J. Gresham Machen's book.

  4. BTW - I see that Mr. Armstrong is (in a post linking to this one) disputing Dinesh's status as a "high profile Catholic." Not long ago he himself described Dinesh this way:

"But it's funny that in the very next post, TAO applauds well-known political conservative and devout Catholic Dinesh D'Souza as a representative of Christianity in debate with an atheist:"

In the post linking to this post, though, Armstrong accuses Hays thus:

"Now we can all be entertained by Hay's inevitable sophistical spin. Somehow under his magical abilities of obscurantism D'Souza shall be transformed into (formerly) a devout, fully observant Catholic, and one who should trouble us, as if his departure casts doubt on Catholic truth claims in any way, shape, or form."
